Excavation

Earthwork for rural
and residential properties.

"Excavation" covers a lot of ground — literally. For us, it means moving dirt with intent: cutting a building pad, digging a trench, shaping a pond, regrading a slope, pulling a stump, opening up a culvert, prepping a lot. Every job we run is excavation in some form. This page is the umbrella over the rest of the service list.

Excavation services we offer

  • Site preparation — clearing, cut and fill, compaction, drainage, and final grade for shop, barn, and house pads.
  • Grading & leveling — driveways, building pads, yards, and pasture prep with a box grader on the skid steer.
  • Drainage excavation — French drains, swales, curtain drains, ditches, and culvert installation.
  • Driveway excavation — new gravel driveway cuts, road-bed shaping, culvert installation.
  • Septic excavation — tank pits and drain-field trenching alongside your licensed installer.
  • Pond excavation — small decorative and livestock ponds shaped with the E50.
  • Stump excavation — pulling stumps with the excavator after clearing.
  • Demolition excavation — small structure tear-down and slab removal.

What kind of excavation jobs are right for us

Iron & Earth fits the rural and small-residential side of the excavation market. We're built for jobs from a few hundred square feet up to a couple of acres — properties where one operator with the right machine on a trailer is the right fit. We're not a heavy-civil contractor and we're not running a fleet. If your job needs a 30-ton excavator, dump trucks running in shifts, or commercial site-work scale, you'll want a different shop. If your job fits a Bobcat E50 and a skid steer, we're probably the right call.

Equipment we run

  • Manitou skid steer with box grader and brush cutter attachments — clearing, grading, pad prep, fence-line and ditch work.
  • Bobcat E50 mini excavator with thumb attachment — trenching, digging, stump pulls, pond shaping, septic pits, demolition.

Permits and utilities

Most rural and small-residential excavation work in Oregon doesn't need a permit. When it does, we'll tell you who to call — typically the county for grading over certain thresholds, or DEQ for work near waterways. We always call 811 before any digging job to mark utilities, and we expect you to have done the same before we arrive if the dig is on your timeline.

FAQ

Common questions about excavation work.

Do I need a permit for excavation work on my property?

Most rural and small-residential excavation in Linn County doesn't require a permit. Permits typically come into play for grading over certain volume thresholds, work in floodplains, or anything near a stream or wetland. If your job needs one, we'll tell you who to call — usually the county or DEQ.

How far out are you booking?

Summer is our busy season — lead times typically run 1 to 3 weeks out. Spring and fall stretch a bit further. Winter is often within a week, weather permitting. Call early if you have a hard deadline (a foundation pour, a permit window, a closing date).

Do you handle utility locates?

We always call 811 before we dig. If your job is on a tight timeline, you can call 811 yourself ahead of our arrival to get the locate window started — Oregon requires two business days notice for locates, so this can save schedule time on rush jobs.

What's the biggest job you'll take?

We're built for rural and small-residential work — jobs that fit a skid steer and a Bobcat E50. Practically that's pads up to ~6,000 sq ft, lots up to ~2 acres of clearing, ponds up to ~½ acre. Bigger than that and you'll want a heavier-iron contractor; we'll point you in that direction if it's not our fit.
