Wet-season dirt work:
now, or wait for spring?
Iron & Earth Site Services · October 13, 2026 · 6 min read
The valley gets 40+ inches of rain a year, mostly between October and May. That doesn’t shut dirt work down, but heavy equipment on saturated clay can ruin ground faster than it fixes it. Here’s how we decide what goes ahead and what waits.

Why saturated clay changes the plan
Wet clay won’t compact, it smears, and machines leave ruts that hold water. Rock laid over soft ground sinks. A job that would take a day in dry weather can create a week of repair in wet weather, so the question is always what does the ground need right now?
Often fine in the wet months
- Drainage work. Winter is when you can see where water actually goes. Ditch cleanouts, culvert work and French drains are often done in drier stretches.
- Ditch and culvert clearing, which is more urgent in winter than in summer.
- Driveway repair in dry spells: regrades, potholes and new rock.
- Debris haul-out and storm cleanup.
- Septic work, as the installer’s schedule and the site allow.
- Demolition of sheds, decks and slabs.
Usually better in spring and summer
- Final grading and seeding, which need firm, workable soil.
- Large land clearing on soft ground, where machines can rut and compact the soil.
- Pond construction, which wants dry ground and often permit lead time. See pond construction and permits.
- Building pads that need compaction on firm subgrade.
- Field mowing and fuel reduction, which follow the growing season.
The honest answer
It depends on the week. A dry run in January can be better working ground than a wet April. We’ll look at the site and the forecast and tell you whether going ahead now is smart, or whether waiting saves you money and trouble.
Use the wet months to plan
Walk the property during a heavy rain and note where water collects and runs. That’s the information a drainage plan needs. Then book your spring work early.
